Enamel on mirror

‘I think the power of the mirror paintings come from the objectification of the viewer, and they also complicate the viewer’s subjectivity by means of the imagery cut into the many layers of painted dust. I wanted them to operate like those simple handprints on the wall of a cave, as a way of seeing the past while simultaneously seeing oneself in the present. In the mirror paintings, the primary functions of the mirror, clarity and fidelity, are violated.’ – Tony Matelli
