The work is an appropriation of Basket of Fruit (1599), a still life painting by the Italian Baroque master Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

Rendered with exceptional realism and precision, Caravaggio’s Basket of Fruit is considered a prototype of the still life genre. The intricate details of the fruit create a stark contrast with the abstract, neutral background and the subtle color line on which the basket rests.

The original painting by Caravaggio is held in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana (Ambrosian Library) in Milan.
