“That’s why I work with a cast of characters, all created carefully. As each of them becomes real, so do their environments, their place of being. sometimes, I think they even come from some imaginary character’s mind.” – George Condo
The Other Side of Reality embodies the raw painterly dynamism and psychological intensity that define the artist’s practice. Echoing his signature psychological Cubism, the work intertwines cartoon aesthetics with Old Master influences, creating a striking visual dialogue across art history.
Referencing the iconic subject of The Luncheon on the Grass, previously reinterpreted by Manet, Cézanne, Picasso, and Gauguin, Condo reinvents the theme through his fractured, multi-perspective approach. A swirling, impressionistic sky heightens the dreamlike atmosphere, while the figures exist in shifting psychological states—each thought and emotion unfolding simultaneously in his distinctive cubist language. The Other Side of Reality is both a homage and a radical reinvention, merging tradition with Condo’s deeply personal vision.
