The work by Vik Muniz Portrait of a Boy in Painted Shirt, after Ilya Mashkov (2007), from the Pictures of Pigment series, is an appropriation of the painting created by Ilya Mashkov in 1909.
Ilya Mashkov was a prominent Russian painter and a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds art group, known for his expressive use of color and bold compositions. Mashkov's work reflects the influence of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, infused with the vibrant energy of folk art. Mashkov created portraits that were charged with the emotional intensity of Fauvist colors and defined his style as "picturesque itself". His innovative approach positioned him as a significant figure in the Russian avant-garde movement.
