Damien Hirst first experimented with spin painting in 1992 at his Brixton studio in London. While the spontaneous, unpredictable nature of the spin paintings contrasts sharply with the rigid structure of his spot series, both explore the concept of an imaginary mechanical painter. In these works, the final composition is dictated by Hirst’s selection of colors and the centrifugal force of the spinning machine.

A defining feature of the spin paintings is their playful, exuberant aesthetic, emphasized by elongated titles that always begin with Beautiful and end with painting. Characterized by bold, vibrant hues, Hirst describes them as “childish … in the positive sense of the word,” embracing a sense of uninhibited creativity and joyful experimentation.
