In Peter Saul’s work, formal experimentation is inseparable from social commentary, merging the grand tradition of history painting with visceral reactions to everyday realities. His canvases are charged with exaggerated forms, lurid colors, and an irreverent sense of humor that subverts conventional narratives. Saul’s vision of history is anything but static—here, he fuses historical fantasy with biting humor, warping traditional narratives into an exaggerated, almost cartoonish confrontation with power, gender, and force.
“In Prehistoric Women, the two women show a surprisingly modern attitude. First, they ‘muscled up,’ did a lot of heavy exercising to develop the tremendous muscles needed to wield the stone axes they’re using to dispatch their unwanted husbands.” — Peter Saul
