After relocating to Trinidad in 2005, Chris Ofili embarked on a series of blue paintings influenced by the Jab Jab or "Blue Devils"—a striking carnival tradition in which men descend from the hills with their bodies painted in vivid blue. This sense of enigmatic presence, of known unknowns, became a defining element in his Trinidadian works. Bathed in deep, moody hues, these paintings capture an atmosphere of ritual, transformation, and the interplay between the seen and the concealed, reinforcing Ofili’s enduring fascination with mystery and myth.
