The series of paintings The Operant Conditioning Chamber (2022) references the 1950s experiments of American psychologist B.F. Skinner, who studied the behavior of small animals driven by a random reward system. Painted on aluminum, the works are based on archival photographs from Skinner’s early experiments, depicting birds confined in cages as their behavior was observed and analyzed.

"Using food, leverage, and other environmental factors, Skinner demonstrated that what was thought to be an independent response was in fact a conditioned reflex, thereby calling into question the seemingly immutable concept of free will." – Lauren Slater
