'I wanted to support things that are helpful to people and maybe bash what I think is dangerous. So I switched from being everybody to being myself.' - Jenny Holzer..."I wanted to support things that are helpful to people and maybe bash what I think is dangerous. Jenny Holzer’s Top Secret series draws from intelligence documents made public by the U.S. National Security Archive, revealing classified details about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. At first glance, the works resemble color-theory studies akin to the work of Kazimir Malevich or Ad Reinhardt. However, a closer inspection reveals that the vibrant blocks of color are not pure abstractions but redactions—censorship masking potentially harrowing truths. Some of these documents were so extensively blacked out that little, if anything, remained legible, transforming the bold, cheery hues into ominous veils of obscured information.
