In his provocative, often shocking compositions, John Currin explores the shifting social and sexual boundaries in visual art, shaped by the evolution of society and mass media. He merges the classical techniques of the Northern Renaissance with glossy, hyper-stylized imagery drawn from erotic and fashion magazines. By paralleling his work with Renaissance masters, Currin critiques the phenomenon of "exclusive standards" and stereotypes imposed by contemporary culture, highlighting the fluidity and arbitrariness of accepted ideals of beauty.
