The work from ‘Pictures of magazines’ series is an appropriation of painting by the French artist Henri Matisse.

“What i’ve been doing in this series of works is mimicking the mental inability to piece together those bits of information that make us know someone through the media, by literally composing paintings at different levels from confetti-sized bits of paper punched out from magazines.” – Vik Muniz

Matisse’s Bouquet of Mixed Flowers, created in 1917, presents a simple yet timeless motif: a bouquet of fresh flowers resting on a table. The flowers serve as both a symbol of joy and a decorative element in the interior. While Matisse began with a direct observation of nature, he did not simply replicate reality; instead, he created a new world with its own rules. By exploiting the inherent potential of color, Matisse contrasted flat color fields to not only form a harmonious composition but also to evoke a sense of spatial depth.
