Evgeny Chubarov: Personal Exhibition

Identifying himself as an heir to Russian “archaic” culture, Chubarov drew direct parallels between his artistic intuition and the metaphysics of Malevich’s Black Square:

“In my art, I intuitively seek the proportional relationship between black and white inherent in the 'Black Square', the curvature ratios of surfaces, and the absolute white. I explore the hanging of structures, occlusions, and sudden breakthroughs of white through the thrill of white and black matter."

By 1988, the artist had transitioned to full abstraction. His monumental abstract paintings gained international recognition, with exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Russia. These works were presented alongside those of major contemporary figures such as Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Damien Hirst, Peter Halley, Stephan Balkenhol, and Frank Stella.

Throughout all stages of his practice, Chubarov maintained an intense inner dialogue, marked by expressive force and rigorous technical discipline. His work is driven by chromatic contrast and an ever-evolving formal vocabulary, contributing powerfully to the evolution of post-Soviet and global abstraction. Through this vision, Chubarov revived gestural abstraction in a new intellectual context—offering an original alphabet, language, and dramatic form where image and concept become indivisible.
