Geometric abstraction is explored by Peter Halley and Torben Giehler. Halley’s minimalist compositions, informed by social theory, use schematic forms and fluorescent colors to comment on systems of control and communication. Giehler extends this vocabulary into imagined digital landscapes, where intersecting lines and vivid hues evoke virtual, often utopian, spaces.
Vik Muniz and Tony Oursler investigate illusion and perception through different technologies. Oursler’s video projections—often incorporating disembodied faces and voices—form immersive, psychologically charged encounters that appear to interact with the viewer. Vik Muniz reconstructs iconic images from unconventional materials and photographs them with meticulous precision, exploring the interplay of appropriation, material process, and the viewer’s perception of art.
The material richness of Muniz’s work echoes the surreal sensibility of Kristin Calabrese. Working across painting, sculpture, and collage, Calabrese creates ironic and psychologically charged images that merge realism with invention.
Sculpture is represented by Stephan Balkenhol, Antony Gormley, and Tony Matelli—each exploring distinct approaches to reimagining the human figure. Matelli’s hyperrealist forms, often unsettling in their precision, inhabit dislocated contexts that disrupt perception and evoke a sense of the uncanny. Balkenhol’s carved wooden figures, typically shown in casual poses and contemporary attire, suggest timeless archetypes that bridge the familiar and the symbolic, grounding contemporary sculpture in dialogue with both classical traditions and folk art. Gormley’s abstracted bodies, shaped from metal and void, investigate the relationship between form, space, and presence.
Together, these works reflect the pluralism of contemporary art—nonlinear, open-ended, and multifaceted. We Can Do It offers a snapshot of an evolving artistic landscape, where contrasting approaches coexist and enrich one another.
