“Immerse yourself within your Self, and then you’ll understand what a personal way of life is, as well as the burden of time; the severity of our dubious era will leave you, and help you free your body and soul. Become artist in the most simple and natural way.”
    – Evgeny Chubarov (1934–2012)

Evgeny Chubarov—painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and recipient of the prestigious Jackson Pollock Foundation award—remains one of the most enigmatic figures in Russian art. Working in his own singular style alongside leading representatives of Soviet nonconformist art such as Ilya Kabakov, Andrey Monastyrsky, and Erik Bulatov, Chubarov captured the philosophical essence of a new era. His work transforms abstract symbols into contemplative images, channeling the energy of the surrounding world and embedding it in the language of conceptual art.

Identifying himself as an heir to Russian “archaic” culture, Chubarov drew direct parallels between his artistic intuition and the metaphysics of Malevich’s Black Square:

“In my art, I intuitively seek the proportional relationship between black and white inherent in the 'Black Square', the curvature ratios of surfaces, and the absolute white. I explore the hanging of structures, occlusions, and sudden breakthroughs of white through the thrill of white and black matter."

In the 1970s and 1980s, Chubarov created his renowned series of dynamic, multi-figure ink compositions on paper. These figurative abstractions explore states of duality and transformation, placing the human figure within a world of conflict and harmony, dissolution and rebirth. Engaging with themes of death, birth, and metaphysical anatomy, Chubarov’s work blends bodies with enigmatic forms from internal landscapes, proposing the human body as the generator of a larger energy field.

By 1988, the artist had transitioned to full abstraction. His monumental abstract paintings gained international recognition, with exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Russia. These works were presented alongside those of major contemporary figures such as Mel Bochner, Sol LeWitt, Damien Hirst, Peter Halley, Stephan Balkenhol, and Frank Stella.

Throughout all stages of his practice, Chubarov maintained an intense inner dialogue, marked by expressive force and rigorous technical discipline. His work is driven by chromatic contrast and an ever-evolving formal vocabulary, contributing powerfully to the evolution of post-Soviet and global abstraction. Through this vision, Chubarov revived gestural abstraction in a new intellectual context—offering an original alphabet, language, and dramatic form where image and concept become indivisible.

  • Works by Evgeny Chubarov are held in major institutional collections, including the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow), the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Moscow), the Museum of Modern Art (Moscow), and the Rutgers University Museum (New Jersey).

In honor of the artist’s 80th anniversary, the Gary Tatintsian Gallery presents a solo exhibition featuring both large-scale abstractions and earlier figurative works from private collections
