The exhibition Something is Happening brings together over 35 sculptures and reliefs by Stephan Balkenhol in a major solo presentation at Kunsthal Rotterdam. Known for his hand-carved wooden figures, Balkenhol engages with the tradition of figurative sculpture while deliberately resisting narrative or psychological interpretation. His visual language is rooted in European art history, interspersed with influences from Ancient Egypt, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance. At the same time they have an everyday quality that invites us to come up with our own interpretations.
