“Reality, which, since its initial definition as the world that exists external to us and independent of our perception, is now comprised of artificial components. Thus bringing the lexicon of art and reality together to create what I have arrived at and call Artificial Realism.”

George Condo. The Other Side of Reality, 2008 (detail)

The Other Side of Reality, 2008 captures the raw painterly dynamism and psychic intensity which characterize the artist's practice. The work shows flashes of each of the artist’s most important touchstones: his own brand of ‘psychological Cubism’, cartoon references, and Old Master works.
This work becomes a continuation of the classic subject, 'The Luncheon on the Grass', which was used in the works by Edouard Manet, Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Paul Gauguin. In The Other Side of Reality, Condo focuses on the character’s various psychological states, capturing concurrent trains of thought through his unique artistic language that draws on the methodology of cubism.
“That’s what I do. I try to depict a character’s train of thoughts simultaneously - hysteria, joy, sadness, desperation. If you could see these things at once that would be like what I’m trying to make you see in my art.”
