From the beginning of his career, Halley has engaged with the complex and expansive structures of the modern urban environment. His paintings, drawings, and Kodaliths translate systems of movement, communication, and control into diagrammatic compositions. Drawing on the legacy of geometric abstraction associated with Kazimir Malevich, Josef Albers, and Barnett Newman, Halley reinterprets the utopian ideals of modernism as metaphors of isolation, surveillance, and confinement.
He has developed a distinctive visual vocabulary based on architectural forms that he refers to as “prisons” and “cells,” interconnected by linear “conduits.” These recurring motifs function as symbolic representations of social, technological, and institutional networks. Through this reduced language, Halley examines how contemporary space is regulated and shaped by forces beyond individual agency.
In 1981, Halley began working with fluorescent Day-Glo paint and Roll-a-Tex, a commercial additive used to create textured interior wall surfaces. The artificial glow of these materials evokes the visual environment of electronic screens and urban signage, while their industrial character challenges traditional notions of painterly authenticity. Throughout the 1980s, his practice was defined by the productive tension between austere geometric form and commercially manufactured surfaces.
Halley rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as part of a group of artists associated with Neo-Conceptualism and Neo-Geo, who first exhibited in New York’s East Village. Alongside figures such as Jeff Koons, Haim Steinbach, Meyer Vaisman, and Ashley Bickerton, he contributed to a movement that employed irony, quotation, and critical distance to address the cultural and economic conditions of late capitalism. Their work engaged with postwar art history while questioning the ideological foundations of modernist abstraction.
During the 1990s, Halley expanded his practice to include large-scale, site-specific installations for museums, galleries, and public spaces. These projects integrate painting, fiberglass relief, architectural interventions, wall-sized diagrams, and digitally generated wallpaper, creating immersive environments that respond directly to their architectural context.
Halley’s artistic philosophy has played a formative role in shaping Neo-Conceptual discourse. His work offers a sustained critique of the mechanization, standardization, and commercialization of contemporary life. Through seemingly simple diagrammatic structures, he addresses issues of social organization, psychological isolation, and mediated connectivity, transforming abstract form into a vehicle for political and cultural reflection.
Alongside his visual practice, Halley has been an influential writer and theorist. Since the early 1980s, he has published numerous essays on art and culture, articulating a critical framework for understanding postmodern and post-conceptual practices. His writings were collected in Peter Halley: Collected Essays 1981–1987 (Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, 1988), which established him as a leading intellectual voice of his generation.
In 1996, Halley co-founded Index magazine with curator and writer Bob Nickas. Inspired by Andy Warhol’s Interview, the publication featured conversations with artists, designers, musicians, and cultural figures, reflecting Halley’s sustained interest in interdisciplinary exchange.
From 2002 to 2011, Halley served as Director of Graduate Studies in Painting and Printmaking at the Yale University School of Art, where he played a significant role in shaping contemporary art education.
His work has been featured in major international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennale, the Whitney Biennial, and the 54th Venice Biennale. It is held in numerous public collections worldwide, including:
